Having Been Discovered by Leanne Jago

Hi everyone and welcome to a brand New Year and let’s face it, it’s one that holds endless possibilities and a brand new perspective on what matters the most. So, I am here to share with a you a little piece that I created.

To start with, I had some blocks of wood that I have collected ever since discovering the amazing Gayle Price (if you haven’t heard of her do yourself a favour and look her up on Instagram). She creates these magical wood blocks that are truly out of this world. Well that was where I started but as per usual I went in a slightly different direction but one that was fun. I covered the block in gesso, ripped up the full-page door from the Doors and Windows collection, some book pages, and pianola roll and then set about collaging it onto my block, covering all sides. Then I added some more gesso and some crackle medium. And things were starting to come along nicely.

And then… well… I got carried away and forgot to take photos along the way. So, I will just have to let you know what I did. I put a couple of drops of DecoArt Media Antiquing cream (black) and a spritz of Distress Oxide spray (Iced Spruce) and a spray of water then I set it with a heat gun. Well, it still wasn’t quite working so I splattered some Distress Oxide (Peacock Feathers) and I loved it, so I decided to repeat the process on all of the sides…

This provided me with my base to then layer up some more pieces from the Doors & Windows, Anemones & Friends and Faces & Figures Collections.

The first side has a set of Shuttered Windows and some brickwork, layered up with some stitching and calico, and finished with a little saying.

This side features the Palm Reader from the Faces & Figures collection that I adhered to an old teabag, and to keep to some continuity throughout the block layered with stitching and calico and finished with a saying.

Side 3 features a flower from the tissue paper from the Anemones and Friends collection that I stuck down and then added some of the Distress Oxide (peacock feathers) and outlined with a fude ball pen to bring back it’s punch with text, calico and stitching continuing on.

Side 4 features a Window from the Doors and Window collection (and I know the pic doesn’t quite show it but I layered some clear crackle behind the window so give it a less pristine look), and finished off the same as the other sides.

The top piece, an eye from the Faces and Figures collection which was given the same treatment as the hand piece.

I thought I would show you what the bottom looks like, this gives you an indication of what lies beneath the layers to finish the piece.

 

I really love how this turned out and am looking forward to adding it to my work desk. I love that I can keep turning it around, making it feel like a new piece of art all the time.
